Wikileaks Hacked! Website Defaced by Ourmine Group. Challenge Complete, says Ourmine

It appears that the WikiLeaks domain “wikileaks.org” had been hijacked

?

A few hours ago, the WikiLeaks website had seemed to be hacked by the Ourmine group. The website homepage was altered with a message from the group to WikiLeaks talking about the challenge that Wikileaks had put out for Ourmine.

The defaced page read the message:

“Hi, it’s OurMine (Security Group), don’t worry we are just testing your…. blablablab, oh wait, this is not a security test! Wikileaks, remember when you challenged us to hack you?”

“Anonymous, remember when you tried to dox us with fake information for attacking WikiLeaks?”

“There we go! One group beat you all! #WikileaksHack lets get it trending on twitter!”

Upon investigating the hack, it was found out that there is no indication that the WikiLeaks servers and website had been compromised. However, it appears that the WikiLeaks domain “wikileaks.org” had been hijacked.

OurMine hackers managed to gain access to wikileaks.org domain and changed its DNS (Domain name System) to a hacker-controlled server.

DNS is the service is responsible for converting a website’s name to its logical address on the internet. It’s basically a pointer wherein the domain name i.e. wikileaks.org points to an address like 1.2.3.4 and this is what the hackers seem to have changed.

Ankush Johar, director of BugsBounty.com. said, "In pure technology and damage terms, this is not a big deal, but to be able to do this is a big reputation blow for Wikileaks."
