Decoding AI for the Indian Defence Force

In the field of defense and geopolitics, the development of technology has to be elevated due to the increase in demand for weapons and arms.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a designing machine which has the ability to think. The very idea of creating such machines is to make the lives of humans easier. Keeping this thought in mind, the Indian Army may take help of AI to predict the servicing of the arms and also to ensure the life and the potential features of their military pieces of equipment. Robots and Artificial Intelligence are a combination of technology and cognitive intelligence representation.

In the field of defence and geopolitics, the development of technology has to be elevated due to the increase in demand for weapons and arms.

To study the impact of Artificial Intelligence in defence, there are about 150 qualified scientists who work in a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which is dedicated to Artificial Intelligence and Robots known as Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (CAIR).

A recent trend to replace the defence equipment with robots which are smart, intelligent and learn by observing, trial and correcting errors to enhance their operation and on the other hand are efficient and cost-effective. The future war may get dominated by Robots and AI. Both, Robotics and AI can have an image interpretation for target identification. Most importantly the robots and AI shall be camera equipped and fire resistant.

A BOON OR A BANE?

As every coin has two sides, similarly Artificial Intelligence has its own pros and cons. This topic is an on-going debate.

Decoding of sentiments: Artificial Intelligence can be used to decode the intention of a terrorist video. It can be used for the sentiment of social media posts, including on Twitter and WhatsApp - to understand the public sentiment, for instance, 9/11 attack or 26/11 attack or anything related to J&K and Pakistan.

Error Reduction: Artificial Intelligence helps in error reduction that means the minor mistakes which happens from the side of human will also be reduced.

Digital Thinkers: Highly advanced organizations use ‘avatars’ which are replicas or digital assistants who can actually interact with the users, thus saving the need for human resources.

But on the other side, it has some cons as well…

Unemployment: Introduction of Artificial Intelligence will lead to Unemployment which is a major problem of our country, many officers, soldiers and other military employees will be jobless increasing the unemployment rate.

Expensive in nature: In addition to this, Artificial Intelligence is very expensive as they are very complex machines and its maintenance and repair require a huge cost. In some severe breakdowns, there are great chances to lose the codes that are built inside the robots and to recover the lost codes and installation of programmes will again take huge cost and time.

Creativity: Artificial Intelligence may become a cause of threat as they do not understand the difference between good or bad. Being a replica of humans, they cannot have the creativity and understanding which humans have.

The army is working in collaboration with the experts to spread the horizons of Artificial Intelligence in the defence sector as well.
